Aletsch glacier Unesco - world nature heir
With nearly 23 kms big Aletsch glacier is the
longest ice stream of the Alps, surrounded by the Aletschwald,
one highest Arvenwälder of Europe (2200 m.ü. M.).
The Jungfrau - Aletsch-Bietschhorn
region is the strongest glaciated part of the Alps. We find there
the biggest glacier of Europe and a whole row of classic glacier
phenomena, like U valleys, glacier hollows, from the glacier
formed horns and Moränen.
The area around Aletsch glacier
delivers an excellent geologic recording of the elevations
and compressions which formed long ago the Alps.
The variety of fauna and flora,
appears in many animals which have her living space in the alpine
and subalpinen areas. The way like the plants after the retreat
of the glaciers the area in possession take, is an excellent
example of the expiry of the pflanzlichen colonization. The impressive
sight of the northern wall of the high Alps, centres on the scenery
of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, plays an important role in
the European culture.
