The Étang de la Gruère is a blocked moor lake which is in a hollow on the plateau of the free mountains in the canton Jura. He lies on 998 ms ü. M. on the local ground of Saignelégier, possibly on half a way between Saignelégier and tramelan. (Parking lots by the Sägerei).

The lake is 600 ms long, at the narrows place 60 ms wide and about 4.5 ms deep. The nature reserve Étang de la Gruère encloses with the tract of forest around the real lake and two other small moor ponds northeast of it a surface by chance 1 km ². Typically for the water of the pond is the brown color. This mysterious colouring is the result of the decomposition process which makes peat from organic matter. The peat can reach in the middle of the peninsula a shift from up to 6 ms.

History

The history of the marshy landscape started about 20 ' 000 years ago. The high-level moor of the Étang de la Gruère lies on the porous lime subsoil of the free mountains. Surrounding hilltops and height backs were used by glaziale erosion during the ice ages and fluviale erosion in the course of the time and hollows with marl layers and sound layers were lined which sealed the permeable subsoil. On these water-impervious layers the high-level moor developed. With the retreat of the glaciers the water collected in the Gruèr basin, emptied itself in a shaft where it runs off still today, before it follows his subterranean run. The water steps only in the valley kettle of tramelan again.

An affectionately invested way goes around the pond. In the shade of the forests and on good ways, the lake lets itself in about 1 hrs to wandering. Because it concerns a nature reserve, the invested way may not be left. Along the way 10 boards inform about the area around the Étang de la Gruère.

The high moor zone shows a unique vegetation with peat mosses, cranberry and moor berry, blueberry shrubs and rosemary moor. The forests exist to the central issue of spruces, Bergföhren as well as moor birches and midget birches. Rare and from the extinction threatened plants and animals find here a home.

In 1963 the area of the Étang de la Gruère was arranged under nature conservation.
