The 12 millennial churches
At the middle of 15-th century priest Elogius Kiburger reported
in the Strättliger chronicle about the for a long time extinct
gender of the governors of the castle of Strättligen. The
fourth chapter of this chronicle tells about king Rudolf II of
Hochburgund, with his legend wife who lived queen Berta, in the
year 933 in the castle Strättligen in the Thunersee.
King Rudolf has seen a big{great} town{city} with 12 gates in
the dream. On every gate he saw an angel holding guard. A priest
interpreted to him the dream and advised the king, 12 daughter
churches of the " church in the paradise “ (was called
to some at that time) to build.
The king transformed council straight away and let in Frutigen,
Leissigen, Aeschi, Wimmis, Uttigen, Thierachern, Scherzlingen,
Thun, Hilterfingen, Sigriswil, Amsoldingen and Spiez build 12 churches.
The construction work stretched till 11-th century.
The locations of 12 Churches of Thunersee lie at strength
places.
It concerns zones with raised natural energy. It is noteworthy
that at these strength places remarkable regional signs, how especially
nice lakes, mountains, trees, brooks or forest groves appear. Cloisters
and churches were often built at such places.
It further strikes that these strength places are at places at
which already in the early time people have assembled to celebrate
together and to hold rituals. The region around the Thunersee was
already settled in prechristian time. A row of stone-temporal cult
sites, Celtic sanctums and Early-Christian places are witnesses
from these times. The tradition of the holy scenery has kept with
the antiquity till this day.
The millennial churches around the Thunersee are all so-called
oriented churches. This means that they are put on by the east
to the west. As a rule the main entrance is in the west and the
altar in the east. The plan of the churches forms a cross. Many
animal figures are also often illustrated what makes clear the
presence of the nature in the church interior. In the church
Amsoldingen we find a font with animal symbols.
